Overview
Coaching is included in A3 Thinking 101 and for anyone interested in becoming Lean Practitioner Certified.
Why Would Someone Want Lean Coaching?
A3 Thinking is not easy, especially if you’re new to it. It’s very easy to get stuck or stay at the surface of the problem. Coaches help you examine the problem more thoroughly, introduce new tools or concepts that could help with your particular problem, and ask questions to help you work through your problem and next steps. Coaching can offer another perspective or an outside view of your problem.
When Should Someone Reach Out For Lean Coaching?
If you’re taking the A3 Thinking 101 class, you will automatically be assigned a coach to work with.
If you’ve taken a course in our Lean Learning Pathway in the past and need support with A3 Thinking but don’t remember who your coach is, please reach out to our Training Coordinator.
If it's been a while since you’ve taken a class, but you want to submit an A3 for Lean Practitioner Certification, then still reach out. We can pair you with your original coach or assign a new coach to help walk you through your A3.

Coaching Kata
Coaching Kata is a set of routine questions that aim to help develop coaching skills for the person asking and to help guide learners through an improvement cycle.
Coaching Kata is a great starting point for questions in leader rounding and catchball practices.
The Five Questions
- What is the Target Condition?
- What is the Actual Condition now? Reflect on the Last Step Taken (Because you don't actually know what the result of a step will be!)
- What did you plan as your Last Step?
- What did you Expect?
- What Actually Happened?
- What did you Learn?
- What Obstacles do you think are preventing you from reaching the target condition? Which *One are you addressing now?
- What is your Next Step? (Next experiment) What do you expect?
- How quickly can we go and see what we Have Learned from taking that step?
*You'll often work on the same obstacle with several experiments
